CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care


This qualification reflects the role of educators in early childhood education and care who work in regulated children’s education and care services in Australia. Educators at this level are responsible for designing and implementing a curriculum that meets the requirements of an approved learning framework and for maintaining compliance in other areas of service operations.
Educators use specialised knowledge and analyse and apply theoretical concepts to diverse work situations.
They may have responsibility for the supervision of volunteers or other educators. Early childhood educators work in long daycare centres, family daycare, pre-schools, or kindergartens.


⦁ hold a CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or
⦁ CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.


To achieve a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, learners must successfully complete a total of 15 units consisting of 12 core units and 3 elective units.

CHCECE053 Respond to grievances and complaints about the service.


Apply for advanced standing for one or more units. Processes for recognition include:

⦁ CREDIT TRANSFER – It applies to situations where learners have completed units with another provider identical to those in which they plan to enrol.
⦁ RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) – If you already have work or life experience in the childcare industry achieved through formal or informal training, Target Training offers RPL to ensure that learners are appropriately recognised.


Learners must complete a minimum of 280 vocational workplace hours in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia to complete this qualification.
These are the overall qualification requirements, and also specifically link to the following units:

⦁ CHCECE042 Foster holistic early childhood learning, development, and wellbeing
⦁ CHCECE048 Plan and implement children’s education and care curriculum.

If these units (above) are completed as individual units, 160 work placement hours are required for each unit.


A language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) test is carried out prior to the commencement of the course to ensure that every student is capable of completing the course in which they have enrolled. A range of methods are applicable to this qualification including all or some of the following.

⦁ Observation reports
⦁ Case studies
⦁ Portfolio of evidence


Government funding may be available for eligible students in NSW.
